As the only player representing Puerto Rico, Pacheco shot 1-under-par 70 and leads by two strokes heading into the second round. Earlier this year, Valeria played in the ANNIKA Invitational USA in Orlando where she finished T66.
Argentina’s Ela Belen Anacona (2016 Runner-Up), Valentina Rossi and Pilar Muguruza share a tie for second along with Anika Veintemilla of Ecuador. They each had opening rounds of 1-over-par 72.
2016 defending champion Agustina Gomez Cisterna had a hole-in-one on No. 9 today. She is currently T11 and only six strokes back from the lead.
Following the first round of play, the participants were treated to Annika’s “Winning Approach” seminar where Annika had a chance to welcome the players to the event and spoke about her experiences and lessons she learned throughout her career.
We also had a guest speaker, Vanina Oneto, join us this year. Vanina is a retired field hockey player from Argentina who won the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and the bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens with the National field hockey team. She also won the 2002 World Cup, the 2001 Champions Trophy, 3 Pan American Games and the Pan American Cup in 2001. Vanina shared her Olympics experience with the players and discussed the steps she took to become a champion.
The second round will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday and, following play, Annika will host a clinic for the players to share some insights from her playing career.
