Regarded by many as the greatest professional golf tournament in Latin America, this weekend marks the 10th edition of the Lorena Ochoa Match Play tournament. After a successful stroke-play history, last year it became the only event on the LPGA schedule to use a match-play format.
Of the 64 players in this year’s field, nine are alumnae of ANNIKA Foundation events. ANNIKA alum Jessica Korda, who played in the ANNIKA Invitational USA in 2009 and 2010, will square off against Marina Alex in round one. Jessica began her professional career at the end of 2010 and has four LPGA Tour victories to her credit. Her sister, Nelly Korda, will also be in attendance. Nelly played in ANNIKA Invitational USA for three consecutive years starting in 2013. She is currently in her rookie year on tour and has a first-round match against Beth Allen.
Two-time ANNIKA Invitational USA (2009-10) participant Laetitia Beck will battle Maude-Aimee Leblanc. She is the first golfer from Israel to qualify for the LPGA. She also played in the 2016 Rio Olympics and finished (T31). Gaby Lopez is another ANNIKA Invitational alumna, competing in 2010 and 2011. She also played in the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in 2015 while attending the University of Arkansas. She has a tough first-round match, drawing defending champion, Carlota Ciganda. 2009 ANNIKA Invitational USA participant Austin Ernst will play Ana Menendez.
Simin Feng is a familiar name at the ANNIKA Invitational USA. Not only did she win the inaugural 2009 tournament, but she competed in the four following years as well. She was only the fourth Chinese Player to earn her LPGA Tour card and will be matched against 2016 Olympic Gold Medal winner, Inbee Park. Danielle Kang, a 2009 ANNIKA Invitational USA competitor, will be playing Alena Sharp. Megan Khang played in the ANNIKA Invitational USA three years in a row ending in 2015. She has drawn Jennifer Song in the first round.
Completing the ANNIKA alumnae roster is Angel Yin. She played in four consecutive ANNIKA Invitational USA’s, including the 2015 edition which she won. This is her rookie year on the LPGA Tour and she’s coming off her career-best finish this past weekend with a T5 at the Volunteers of America Texas Shootout. She has drawn World No. 1 player, Lydia Ko, in round one.
It should be an exciting weekend of golf! Good luck to all the participants especially to all our ANNIKA alums!
