Marion Veysseyre of France rallied from a one-shot deficit to win the third annual ANNIKA Invitational Europe. Playing in the penultimate group, Veysseyre fired a final round 69 to finish the event at 3-under-par 213 to win by one shot over Elodie Bridenne of France and Ana Pelaez of Spain.
The ANNIKA Invitational Europe was a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72 Old Course at Forsgårdens Golf Club. The course played at 5,380 meters (5,885 yards) for the 76 players from nine different countries.
Veysseyre jumped out of the gates early with a birdie on No. 2 to grab a share of the lead. Three more front-nine birdies led to a front-nine 32 and sole lead of the tournament. After a birdie on No. 11, a costly double bogey on No. 13 dropped her back into a share of the lead with Pelaez. Veysseyre was able to play the remaining difficult holes in even par, which was good enough to hold off Bridenne and Pelaez for the title.
As champion of the ANNIKA Invitational Europe, Veysseyre earned an invitation to play in the ANNIKA Invitational USA in Orlando in February 2015. She also earned a spot in September’s LET Helsingborg Open, where she’ll get to play alongside the pros.
“I’m really happy to play in Annika’s tournament in the USA because I’ve only been to the USA one time before,” said Veysseyre. “And to play a tour event will be the first time for me. I think it will be a good experience.”
Bridenne and Pelaez finished in a tie for second at 2-under-par 214 and also earned trips to the 2015 ANNIKA Invitational USA. Linnea Ström of Sweden, the 2012 ANNIKA Invitational Europe champion, finished fourth at even-par 216. Sweden’s Filippa Möörk finished fifth at one-over-par 217.
Overall it was a great week in Sweden. Not only did we see some great golf, but the players all got to experience Annika’s “More Than Golf” philosophy. From the Junior-Am, clinic, educational sessions and barbeque, the players learned a lot this week. They were also introduced to college coaches from 16 different U.S. schools that were in attendance during the week. Thank you to all of the sponsors, staff and volunteers that made this event possible.
See you at Bro-Bålsta GC in 2015!
